Online Jewelry Store, Basic Knowledge

By Steve Blanchard

Part 2

An Online Jewelry Store is without question one of the best starting points for your online business venture. Initial outlay is minimal, product is easy to handle and returns can be massive.

This article is part 2 of a 3 part tutorial that discusses some basic knowledge you should know when you decide that the jewelry industry is the path you want to take.

Purity and weight are the two defining factors when considering the value of solid gold.

Purity is described in three ways: Percent (parts of gold per 100). Fineness (parts of gold per 1000). Karat (parts of gold per 24 (not to be confused with the diamond weight measurement: carat)).

The following table shows examples of these values for common grades of gold.

Percent Gold

European System

Karat System
100% = 1000 fine = 24 karat
91.7% = 917 fine = 22 karat
75.0% = 750 fine = 18 karat
58.3% = 583 fine = 14 karat
41.6% = 416 fine = 10 karat*
33.3%= 333 fine= 9 karat

*The minimum amount of gold that a product can be composed of and carry the label "gold", according to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission "Guides to the Jewelry Industry".

Weight in everyday language is measured in grams. This is an anomaly as the correct unit for measuring gold is the troy ounce. The conversion for 1 troy ounce is 480 grams or 1.097 ordinary ounces.

Naturally; purer, heavier gold can be sold for more money.

Experience tells us that the most sought after grade is 14 karat, to begin with, until you find your niche, we would recommend that this is what you concentrate on. The color, be it yellow, rose or white has no affect and is sold in equal amounts.
